Originaire du sud de l'Inde, la citronnelle est une plante herbacée de la famille des Poacées. Elle pousse dans les régions tropicales d'Asie, notamment en Chine et au Vietnam, ainsi qu'au Népal, en Afrique et aux Antilles. La plante forme des touffes denses pouvant atteindre 1,5 mètre de haut et dégage une odeur proche du citron.

Souvent limitée à ses propriétés répulsives, l'huile essentielle de citronnelle est pourtant une huile essentielle hautement anti-inflammatoire, antiseptique et purifiante. Riche en citronellal, géraniol, citronellol, acétate de géranyle et limonène, elle possède un arôme doux, floral, rosé et citronné, idéal pour les applications alimentaires et parfumées.
